From December 4 to March 1, the summer house of Rainis and Aspazija in Jūrmala, at 5/7 Jāņa Pliekšāna Street, invites you to an exhibition by Gita Sprince, a photo and video production student at the Latvian Culture College (LKA), entitled “saplūsme” (convergence).
The exhibition “saplūsme” explores the interconnection between women and nature from an ecofeminist perspective, emphasizing women’s connection to nature and their relationship with patriarchal structures. The exhibition consists of four works of art: seven photographs of Latvian poets created using tree leaf shapes, a moss carpet with video projection, and audio recordings of poems. The exhibition also features an essay by curator Amanda Kaufman on Aspazija’s poetry and the beginnings of ecocriticism in Latvia.
The photo portraits reflect the image of women in nature, encouraging us to think about sustainability, cyclicality, and nature as a constant force with which humans are not in a hierarchical relationship, but rather closely intertwined. As artist Gita Sprince points out: “saplūsme” visually depicts the interconnection between women and nature, emphasizing both their fragility and their ability to stand up to the preconceptions imposed by society. The exhibition includes handwritten projections and interpretations of Aspazija’s poems “Dzeltens zars” (Yellow Branch), “Putekļu lietutiņš” (Dust Rain), “Ak, pat tevi!” (Oh, Even You!), and “Lūpu rotaļa” (Lip Play), which reveal the poet’s relationship with nature, symbolism, and a woman’s inner self. The exhibition also features poems by Madara Linnas Ēvalde, Anna Auziņa, Iveta Ratinīka, Krista Anna Belševica, Evelīna Andžāne and Grēta Volkoviča, recorded in collaboration with Radio NABA.
The exhibition will be open until March 1, 2026.
